2011 Polish Hill River Riesling

"UNSCREW the cap and undertake a masterclass in Clare Riesling at it's finest. Freshly cut green limes, bright and zingy, are followed by a line of slightly richer brown-lime cordial flavour. It all plays in sync with the great fresh citrus juice acid drop bite that excites this variety's keenest fans. One of the best refreshers going around this summer."

94 Points  Drink: 2012-2014 or 2018-2022

One day, early in the next decade, we will look back on the 2011 vintage and marvel at just how magnificently the Clare Valley managed to pull it off, and it's rieslings like this that will likely prompt the conversation.  This is the finest, most precise and longest-lived Paulett's entry-level riesling in years.

The Best Wine of 2011

 Jeni Port

20 December, 2011

ANOTHER tough year for the Australian wine industry.  Another excellent year for Australian wine drinkers with strong national and international competition keeping a lid on prices.

Spoilt for choice, we saw the continued rise of the BOB phenomenon - the Buyer's Own Brand - with more shelf space in supermarkets devoted to anonymous wine sourced and bottled by the big two, Woolworths and Coles (and, to a lesser extent, independent retailers), at prices competing with and sometimes undercutting known Australian brands.

Amid such plenty, perhaps we should be asking: at what cost do we enjoy these wines?  Here are the standouts of 2011....

Best riesling  A fine batch of rieslings emerged from the wonderful 2010 vintage but the best by a long mile was Paulett's Antonina Premium Polish Hill River Riesling ($45).  "This is the finest riesling I have ever produced," winemaker Neil Paulett wrote on the back label.  Indeed: a riesling of grace, structure, subtlety and intensity.

2006 Pauletts Aged Release Riesling

Aged riesling is a sheer delight and it's widely available.  This Clare Valley producer has its vineyards in the Polish Hill River locale and retains some stock for release as a five-year-old.  The 2006 riesling has gently toasty, pure lime juice flavours, and is powerful and concentrated, finishing crisp, dry and zesty.

James Halliday - 2012 Australian WIne Companion

Antonina Polish Hill River Riesling 2010
Pale green-quartz: it's not until the after taste that you understand why Neil Paulett says that this is the finest Riesling that he has produced, up to that point this is a beautifully balanced and proportioned Riesling but the length and intensity of the of the finish and the after taste are wholly remarkable. High-shouldered custom-made bottle. Rating 97. To 2030

Polish Hill River Riesling 2010
Pale green-straw: the fragrant bouquet has waves of citrus, the lime juice palate lifting the bar further, with its intensity and length, amplifying all the promise of the bouquet. The '06 Aged Release tells you why you should hop into this wine now. Rating 96. To 2025.

Polish Hill River Aged Release Riesling 2006
Glistening green-yellow quickens the pulses: lime & a hint of toast on the bouquet leads to an intensely focused and vibrant palate, the lime juice flavours wrapped around a core of minerally acidity. Rating 96. To2020.

Andreas 2007
Clear purple-crimson; warm spice liquorice nuances to the black fruits of the bouquet are followed by a textured medium bodied palate, the texture provided by fine tannins and also by the multi-faceted flavours of the fruit, shiraz. Rating94. To 2030

Polish Hill River Shiraz 2007
The colour is fractionally less deep than the Andreas, but is good; the fragrant bouquet leads into an attractive medium-bodied shiraz, with black and red berry fruits plus touches of pepper and spice on the lively and long finish. Like Andreas a triumph for the '07 vintage. Rating 94. To 2020.

Pauletts Polish Hill River Aged Release Riesling 2006

People in the Australian wine industry rattle on about how age-worthy riesling is.  Thankfully, a few makers release bottle-aged wine that shows what the fuss is all about.  This Clare Valley example offers rich lemon-butter and toasty smells, followed by a concentrated palate of great depth, lovely texture and excellent persistance.  Delicious.

Pauletts 2007 Shiraz

The Polish Hill River district of Clare really can turn some treats in the riesling classes as well as shiraz if this is any indication from an otherwise hard, drought year in many regions.  It shows opulence and powerful fragrances with plenty of follow through in the drinking if you like your reds bold and handsome.  A finishing flourish of ripe berries adds truely lasdting impression.

World's best riesling a hit

ALL the money in the world can't buy you a bottle of this award-winning drop.

Charlotte Osland From: Sunday Mail (SA) December 19, 2010

Paulett's 2005 Aged Release Polish Hill River Riesling was named the world's best riesling at the 11th Canberra International Resiling Challenge, beating 496 other entries.

In a month, Paulett's stocks of its winner have completely sold out.

Owner Neil Paulett puts the sell-out in part down to his decision to ignore suggestions he should jack the price of his winner up to at least $100 from its original $35.

"At the competition it was suggested to be at least $100 a bottle however, the thought of charging that much was daunting and seemed a bit much considering were a small owned and operated family business," the 63-year-old said.

"We decided to meet halfway and charge $52 a bottle. Everyone should be able to afford a good priced wine."

The internationally recognised award was the biggest win in the boutique winery's 27-year history.

"It was quite surreal, I couldn't comprehend we had won, for this to happen was unbelievable," Mr Paulett said.

The family has just a handful of its 500 dozen cases left, saved for their personal cellar.

Their next target is to win riesling challenge back-to-back with their soon to be released 2006 vintage.

"It will be on the market early next year," he said.

"We will absolutely, definitely be entering in next year's competition, we don't know anyone who's won it back to back before, but even if someone else in the Clare Valley won, it would be a win.

"I hate to jinx it but were always be optimistic."

"BEST OF THE BEST"

Clare Valley winemaker Neil Paulett was speechless after his 2005 Aged Release Polish Hill River Riesling was named Best Riesling in the World at the recent Canberra International Riesling Challenge.  Almost 500 wines from more than 10 countries were entered.  Neil and his wife Alison celebrated the biggest win in their boutique winery's 27 year history.  "If this award gets a few new people trying aged Riesling then it's a good thing," said Neil.  "Riesling is like a person, when it's young it's bright full of lifew and energetic but when theyget older, like me, they get a bit softer and rounder, develop great character and complexity."

James Halliday News

Paulett shines its light out from under the bushel
James Halliday, October 22, 2010

Neil Paulett is one of the lower profile Clare Valley winemakers, not because of any shortcomings in the wines he makes, but simply because that's the way he is. He (and wife Alison) have been flushed out of this low profile business life with their success at the 11th Canberra International Riesling Challenge last week. The 2005 Paulett Aged Release won trophies for the Best Australian Museum Riesling, Best Dry Riesling in the World, Best Riesling in Australia, and the competition?s highest award, Best Riesling in the World.

You get the flavour of Neil when he says "The whole experience was a bit surreal to be honest, the first one was a great surprise, I said a few words and thought that would be it for the night. Then they called me up for the second one and I thought "how good is this?" When they called me a third time I must admit I started to get the shakes, it was absolutely incredible. The fourth trophy for Best Riesling in the World just blew me away, I literally couldn't speak."

The wine is available from the cellar door (phone (08) 8843 4328; fax (08) 8843 4202; www.paulettwines.com.au) the tasting note from my (current) 2011 Wine Companion is "Bright green-gold; perfect lime, toast and spice aromas do not show a scintilla of kerosene, the palate with the same pure equanimity, perfectly balanced as it enters a decade of perfection. 96 points; drink to 2025; 13% alc; screwcap; $30."

Small wonder I had a special value symbol against it when it was at $30. Quite reasonably, the price is now $52, but still keenly priced, as more honey, lime and toast characters are starting to emerge.

Tony Love's Wine Reviews - November 2010

Pauletts 2006 Cabernet Merlot

A blend of 70% cabernet and 30% Merlot, this represents another red side of the coin to the fabulous Paulett group of rieslings - the '05 aged release Polish Hill River Riesling just won the best in the world title at the Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

The flavour: A tasty mix of violet aromas and good berry and plum flavours, softening now with friendly structures, background earthiness and oak.  Appealing ease in its drinking.

Paulett Wines Polish Hill River 2006 Shiraz

www.winemuse.com.au

This is an unexpectedly big wine from the Clare from the Paulett family. It is big in many ways - densely concentrated plum coloured, plenty of rich chocolate blackberry, spicey cinnamon & earth character backed up smooth tannins & a slightly bitey 15% alcohol just poking it's nose out to be noticed in the glass that I tasted. A fuller bodied rich style that will be loved by many.  I would think that this would be a good wine to have with a New York strap of beef with velvety mushrooms.

Gotta love it when great vintages are held back for late release. This one is evolving slowly and surely, with zesty acidity and primary lemon and lime fruit still lingering on the palate. The signs of age are beginning to add their toasty, kerosene-like complexity. More Info..

Made from the same fruit as Pauletts Polish Hill River Riesling, left on the vines a few weeks longer. It maintains it's fresh, tight acidity, which balances the honeyed sweetness and baked apple richness of the style. Lemon and lime and cinamon spice add interest to this value for money style.

2005 Pauletts Antonina Riesling - Clare Valley SA.

94 points

"The Riesling from Neil Paulett's Polish Hill River estate is always among the more defined and expressive from his part of the Clare Valley. In 2005, when many great Rieslings emerged from the Clare district, Paulett reserved a parcel right from picking, watched it through the winery and liked what he saw. As A result, he has just released this "premium" Riesling, a terrific example of the intense, precise and savoury Polish Hill River style. Lovely flinty, slaty lime peel aromas pin it to the map and to the stunning 2005 vintage, the wine has just settled into a deep state of primary expression, crystal clear and beautifully defined. The palate is marked by terrific intensity, as mouth-watering acidity sparkles across the palate, dripping pure limejuice flavour from a sturdy spine of acid drive. It hones in finer through the finish, turning dry and savoury, offering great length and impressive resolve."

Pauletts 2006 Polish Hill River Riesling

"The 2006 Rieslings from the Clare Valley are uniformly excellent -and the best of those Rieslings come from the Polish Hill River region, which producers tight knit wines that will cellar well. It would be a strong man who cellared this wine, however, because it is down right delicious in its youth; with lovely floral aromas and delicate lime and lemon tang on the very dry palate. Very refreshing perfect with seafood dishes and an excellent choice with turkey risotto.

Most Cabernet sauvignon / merlot blends are one-dimensional. This is more serious, with concentration and length of flavour. Good acidity balances the fruit weight; 17 months in French Oak adds complexity to the middle palate.
