JAMES HALLIDAY AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION 2011:

Five Red Star Winery 2010 & 2011

Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.  Will have at least two wines rated above 94 points and have had a five star rating for the previous two years.

Antonina Polish Hill River Riesling 2009        Rating 96
Whereas the standard of '09 riesling is all about immediate enjoyment and generosity, this is all about finesse, intensity and extreme length. A great riesling that cries out for time in bottle. Screwcap.  12.5% alc. Drink 2029

Polish Hill River Aged Release Riesling 2005    Rating 96
Bright green-gold; perfect lime, toast and spice aromas do not show a scintilla of kerosene, the palate with the same pure equanimity, perfectly balanced as it enters a decade of perfection. Screwcap.  13% alc. Drink 2025

Andreas 2006   Rating 95
Excellent hue; an altogether more subtle wine than the standard shiraz; here blackberry, dark plum and just a whisper of licorice are wrapped in a fine gauze of tannins; has particularly good length. Shiraz. Screwcap.  14.5% alc. Drink 2026

Polish Hill River Shiraz 2006       Rating 94
Has a fragrant, multifaceted bouquet of spiced plum, polished leather and licorice, the medium-bodied palate precisely following suit, tannins and oak in support roles; carries its alcohol without complaint. Screwcap.  15% alc. Drink 2021

Polish Hill River Riesling 2008      Rating 90
Focused and flinty with lime juice bouquet; good texture and fresh acid; but will build. Screwcap.
12.5% alc. Drink 2018

Polish Hill River Cabernet Merlot 2006      Rating 89
A well made, medium-bodied wine with some savoury elements on the bouquet, the palate adding distinctly sweet fruit through to the finish. Screwcap.  14.5% alc. Drink 2015

Stone Cutting Clare Valley No Oak Chardonnay 2008      Rating 87
Clever name, and picked appropriately early with some tangy/citrussy/minerally notes. Screwcap.   12.5% alc. Drink 2011

2005 Aged Release Riesling    Gold Medal & Trophy - Clare Valley Riesling Trophy

"The judges said: Toasty nose with a touch of oily minerality. Lime and lemon peel on the palate with complex development. Nutty and ripe and racy acidity and a long, elegant finish."

Pauletts 2005 Aged Release Riesling

93 points Tyson Stelzer

Gotta love it when great vintages are held back for late release. This one is evolving slowly and surely, with zesty acidity and primary lemon and lime fruit still lingering on the palate. The signs of age are beginning to add their toasty, kerosene-like complexity. More Info..

Pauletts 2009 Late Harvest Riesling

92 points Tyson Stelzer

Made from the same fruit as Pauletts Polish Hill River Riesling, left on the vines a few weeks longer. It maintains it's fresh, tight acidity, which balances the honeyed sweetness and baked apple richness of the style. Lemon and lime and cinamon spice add interest to this value for money style.

BEST SPARKLING

Pauletts Trillians Sparkling Riesling 2008

90/100

Sparkling wine made from riesling never tasted so good.  Floral and honey aromas, a whisper of bottle age but no real yeast character, then a light, tight, delicate palate of real refinement.  Has heaps of flavour nontheless.  Drink now.

The AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW:

January 8-10 - 2010 WINE By Tim White

Pauletts Polish Hill River Riesling 2009

95/100

Gardinia smelling, with nettle and pith.  Stunning texture in the mouth, minerally, almost sea salty - and with pure rose and lime flovours.  Excellent structure; and moreish.  This is the best riesling from the Polish Hill River region I've tasted from the '09 vintage.

Paulett's Antonina Reserve Riesling - Vintage 2009

Nick Stock: Packed full of slatey, mineral character, this has a reserved, savoury nose but plenty of ripe fruit on the palate, searing acidity and some nectarines, limes and white peach.  One of the region's standout wines from this supurb vintage with long-term acid structure. More Info..

Paulett's 2008 Trillians Sparkling Brut

90 Points

"No mistaking this is a riesling with great limes and florals to begin, a lively mousse, a lovely riesling character right through to the finish, showing just the start of some development and oil/resin complexity, which showcases an alternative variety to the usual chardy and pinot."

Pauletts 2006 Polish Hill River Riesling

"This displays brazen, savoury-lime peel, some slate, with plenty of depth & character. Mouth watering and fine palate, showing purity, lime zest and lightly spiced pepper through the cut stone soil characters, impressive intensity strength and balance. A neat oil for salt and pepper calamari."

THE ADELAIDE REVIEW.

Tues 12th Dec 2006 by Nick Stock

2005 Pauletts Antonina Riesling - Clare Valley SA.

94 points

"The Riesling from Neil Paulett's Polish Hill River estate is always among the more defined and expressive from his part of the Clare Valley. In 2005, when many great Rieslings emerged from the Clare district, Paulett reserved a parcel right from picking, watched it through the winery and liked what he saw. As A result, he has just released this "premium" Riesling, a terrific example of the intense, precise and savoury Polish Hill River style. Lovely flinty, slaty lime peel aromas pin it to the map and to the stunning 2005 vintage, the wine has just settled into a deep state of primary expression, crystal clear and beautifully defined. The palate is marked by terrific intensity, as mouth-watering acidity sparkles across the palate, dripping pure limejuice flavour from a sturdy spine of acid drive. It hones in finer through the finish, turning dry and savoury, offering great length and impressive resolve."

Pauletts 2006 Polish Hill River Riesling

"The 2006 Rieslings from the Clare Valley are uniformly excellent -and the best of those Rieslings come from the Polish Hill River region, which producers tight knit wines that will cellar well. It would be a strong man who cellared this wine, however, because it is down right delicious in its youth; with lovely floral aromas and delicate lime and lemon tang on the very dry palate. Very refreshing perfect with seafood dishes and an excellent choice with turkey risotto.

Pauletts Polish Hill River Cabernet Merlot 2003.

Most Cabernet sauvignon / merlot blends are one-dimensional. This is more serious, with concentration and length of flavour. Good acidity balances the fruit weight; 17 months in French Oak adds complexity to the middle palate.

Pauletts 2003 Andreas Shiraz 2003

4.5 Stars

Old Style oaky to begin with deeper, darker plum fruit there as well, brooding underneath. The same goes in the mouth with classic Shiraz fruit in well-built foundations that'll probably recede over a few years and hopefully allow the fruit to come to the surface.

HILLS FOOD & WINE SCENE

NOVEMBER 2006 by Heather Britton

Among New release wines from Pauletts in the Clare Valley is the delicious 2006 Polish Hill River Riesling offering tight acid and crisp lemon / lime flavours. The reds include the classy 2003 Andreas Shiraz, complex and brooding with good cellaring potential, and the 2003 Polish Hill River Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz- both very approachable now. The Shiraz is soft and mouth filling with voluptuous cassis, mulberries and spice.
